The March 17th Investment Committee Seminar Deserves Interest

Members might want to attend or tune into Tuesday’s STRS Investment Seminar.

To the surprise of nearly everyone, Investment Committee Chair Alison Lanza Falls has invited Senator Mark Romanchuk and Representative Adam Bird to the seminar. They are scheduled for the 11:30 - 12:15 time slot. Here is why their attendance is interesting.

Senator Romanchuk is the sponsor of Senate Bill 69, which could enact changes to our pension. Representative Bird was responsible for slipping the early morning amendment into Ohio’s Budget Bill HB 96, which had the intent to remove 4 elected members and replace them with government appointees. It took a court injunction to temporarily stop the amendment, which bypassed all elected members of the Ohio Legislature. The fate of this amendment will be decided upon by the 10th District Court of Appeals on March 24, 2026, at 10:45 am. We will post the link for you to attend as soon as it is available.

A bright spot is that some legislators support democratic progress. They believe that STRS members should have control over their pension. If Draconian changes are made to our board, a bipartisan group of legislators (3 Republicans, 2 Democrats) has drafted HB 719 to restore the board to its current state. Let’s hope cooler heads prevail in this election year.
