Dear Governor DeWine,
Stop the Midnight Massacre of our pension system!
At 1:00 am on June 25th, while Ohio voters were sleeping, Rep. Adam Bird introduced his amendment to Ohio's Budget Bill to change the makeup of the STRS Ohio Retirement Board.
While Rep. Bird's clandestine amendment may not have been illegal, it certainly was lacking in transparency, as it eliminated the opportunity for discussion and deliberation by Ohio's lawmakers.
Rep. Sean Brennan, a retired teacher and member of the Ohio Retirement Study Council, has voiced his support for teacher representation on the STRS Ohio Board. Brennan has stated publicly that the move to strip democratically elected teacher and retiree representation from the STRS Board is "deeply troubling" due to a lack of transparency and stakeholder input. He has voiced his concern about the potential loss of a voice for those whose retirement funds are managed by the board. We will remember him at the ballot box.
We, Ohio's active and retired teachers, whose money is invested in the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio, believe strongly that we should have adequate representation and oversight on the board that manages OUR pension.
Governor DeWine, please veto the amendment to change the makeup of the STRS Ohio Board.
If this slippery, early morning amendment to change the STRS Board composition passes, I will never support a Republican running for office in Ohio again.
